Since I mentioned installing flexible brake hoses from Datsun L520/L521
pickups I have received a few e-mails pointing out the possibility of
these hoses having metric rather than SAE threads, and that is possible
to assemble the mismatched threads with the likelihood of leaking or
even blowing the joint completely apart.

I have taken those cautions to heart and begun studying these a little
closer by taking one of the known SAE hoses to my local parts house and
trying to put the threads from some of their pre-assembled brake pipe
into the hose that came off of my roadster. None of the metric hoses
could be inserted into my hose. The SAE hoses fit easily and I could
thread the nut fully into the thread on the hose.

Next I installed my new rear brake shoes and bled the brakes. I found
no leaks after bleeding and then cycled the brake pedal about 100 times
with high pressure. I looked again for leaks. I found one, but not on
one of the hoses in question. The leak was on one side of the inline
coupler located just behind the firewall. A Datsun installed SAE part I
re-used.

The stopping power is amazing now that I have brakes on all four
wheels. In a few days I will raise the car and look at it again. If
there are no leaks I will continue to look for leaks as driving
continues and let the list know what I find.

It would be nice to determine that these hoses are correct for the car.
They are available over the local parts counters.

Tomorrow I tackle the carburetors and see if I can get to the bottom of
my problems there.
