My name is Mitchell Planck. I'm currently the Director of Network Operations
for a small ISP/web hosting company called Internet Applications and
Solutions. We almost went under about a year ago and lost most of the staff,
but I managed to stay, as well as a few other core people and we're pulling
through and the future looks decent here.
I run the network and servers, which are mostly Microsoft NT and W2K, but
I've set up a few linux servers for various tasks. I also do network and PC
consulting for our clients, including VPN and security work, router and
network installation, and I've installed a couple Cisco BBSM/LRE
installations, which are quite cool. These are basically running DSL over
phone lines in large buildings, such as hotels, that aren't wired for
Ethernet. The LRE is Long Range Ethernet, the BBSM is Building Broadband
Service Manager, which is server software that manages the connections. If
you plug in your laptop to the ethernet in your room the browser shows a
window saying that you'll be charged $9.95 a day if you click ok - no matter
what your home page is. It can also interface to the hotel billing system
and do other cool stuff.
We also provide Internet connectivity for a few fraternities and sororities
in Ann Arbor (U of M) and I've put in wireless networks for several of them
as well. God I hate going to the fraternities, they are always stys.
At home, I've got two kids, Megan (11), and Ezra (6). My wife, Marie, works
part-time at the Chelsea Library as a volunteer coordinator. She likes the
roadster but isn't into working on it. We home school and have done so since
Meg was in second grade (she's in sixth now).
I've had my roadster, a '69 1600, since 1985 (I was 16) and it was running
for a few summers before got married, moved to Japan, etc. I've been working
on it for about a half year now, taking it apart still. I studied
Architecture in college (Ohio State) and never had a backround in cars
besides the little work I did on the roadster in high school. I'm trying to
learn more about car guts and I've learned a lot in the last year. I'm
always combing the web for info and since I'm planning on doing the SR20DE
engine, I'll need some frame mods, therefore some welding and to keep costs
down I'm thinking of taking a class or something like that on welding.
Hooking up with a gearhead in town would be cool too. None of my friends are
into cars, they like minivans or have no aptitude.
I started a web site when I started working on my car a couple years ago and
keep it up with some regularity. I'm trying to add other good car stuff,
tech articles and such, and if no one else wants too, I'll create a who's
who section on my site and put our stuff there. I could even set up a user
account so I don't have to do all the mods if someone else wants to help on
that.
