Joe,
    I just went through this fiasco.  The only way I could get mine out was
through thermostat housing.  I know it's a real bear to get off, but once,
the housing is off, getting the sensor out is pretty easy.  Just think of it
as an opportunity to do some preventive maint. on the thermostat.
