All,
I toyed with this idea for a while as well. While there are Nitrous
solutions for carbureted engines they will not see the same performance
boost as newer engines.
Mike Kerr, the guy who builds turbo U20s once told me that if you are going
to build a U20 with Nitrous then you should build an engine specifically for
it. I agree with Greg. You have to build the engine to withstand the
increase in HP. Plan to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I also agree that if you want Nitrous or Turbo charging you are better off
doing an engine swap to a more modern engine that can handle it.

Sean Kirk from Canada has (or had) nitrous on his modified Mikuni U20 with
good
results. He could challenge most anything he wanted. Drawbacks involved
always
having to fill bottles, space (bottles usually go in the trunk), provisions
necessary for increased fuel needs (electric fuel pump, improved ignition,
lots
of other stuff that Sean would tell you about). Sean did it right, in that
he
o-ringed the block, modified the head, did head studs, etc. Most people who
do
nitrous end up blowing up their motors, as they don't spend the time and
money
necessary to prep the motor. Then, when they like a little squeeze, they
start
liking a little more squeeze, and pretty soon the engine says "No more
squeezen
me!" and things break. Power costs, no matter where or how you make it.
Last I
heard, Sean was selling his motor and doing either an SR20DET or a KA24DE
with a
turbo. I look forward to blowing his doors off with the VG30 Turbo next
year...
