Chris,
You can try two things,
1.  be sure the nut on the bottom of the shifter is tight and the grommets
are in good shape.,
2.  The springs in the rear extension housing are worn. You can pull the two
retainer bolts that hold them and insert a small steel ball  when you
reinsert the springs to take up the tension. Not sure if this can be done
with the tranny in, but I've done it twice with the tranny removed.

Some one else also suggested removing the rubber plugs in the shifter and
going with a much stiffer material....haven't tried that.
