It sounds like I may not be the only one to have made the mistake of not
putting in the spacer on the fuel pump.
When I rebuilt the engine on my roadster (many, many years ago), I forgot
the fuel pump spacer. I couldn't understand why I couldn't get my
rebuilt motor to start. I checked spark and it was o.k. Checked fuel,
no fuel. After fumbling around trying to figure out why I wasn't getting
fuel to the carbs, I pulled the fuel pump. As I recall, I stuck my
finger in the block and touched the camshaft. RUH-ROOH!!! (use your best
Scooby Doo impression) I felt some really deep grooves in the camshaft.
I didn't like the idea of having metal shavings in my newly rebuilt
motor, so I ended up pulling the engine and completely disassembling it.
I found a place that repaired camshafts. They filled the grooves with
weld material and re-ground the camshaft.
That was an expensive and extremely time consuming lesson. I hope no one
on this list ever has to go through the pain and suffering that I
experienced.
