I believe Mike is right, and remember reading previous threads on the list
about the problem of no thermostat.
Basically, you get a mix of hot and cold spots in the cylinder head that
cause warpage. The reason for the thermostat is to regulate an even
temperature throughout the head. Even with the thermostat closed, I think
there is a small hole that allows some water to flow during warmup. Some
people drill a wider hole to increase this flow, thereby allowing the
engine to run cooler. But don't do this unless you do some homework!
