The redesign of the dash for 1968 was due to US safety requirements, which
required "soft" dash facings, elimination of protruding toggle switches(thats
why you see so many rocker type switches on late 60s cars), and dash mounted
mirrors.
You will see the same type of treatment on MGB dashes of the same vintage for
example. New increased wiper sweep area requirements are what led to the
high windshield. Again, if you look at a similar vintage MGB you find that
British Leyland's answer was to add a third wiper.
