Bob,
I found the 3M products to be your best bet in removing
the adhesive residue.
On a warm day (70F), spray on the 3M Woodgrain and Stripe
Adhesive Remover. Part Number 051135-08908. Note the word
"adhesive" in the title. There is also a product to loosen
the woodgrain and stripes first, but you need the adhesive
remover.
Once you have sprayed the adhesive remover on, wait about
3 to 5 minutes, then scrape off with something stiff. I found
a good use for old credit cards! ;-)
To remove the remaining residue, time for the 3M General Purpose
Adhesive Cleaner. Part number 051135-08984. That is also the stuff
I used cans of when attaching new weather stripping to the roadster.
At least I found both products not to harm the paint (test the adhesive
cleaner... at least no problem with enamel finishes).
One other possibility... WD40 also helps remove sticky stuff. Worth trying
a little spot.
Cheers,
