T.J.:  thanks for the info.  I may be mistaken, but I don't think this
approach will work on my Singer as the chassis rails are below the
axle., so I can't really lower the entire spring without the axle
interfearing with the chassis.  If I'm overlooking something, let me
know.

This subject comes up all the time on the Jensen list.  Interceptors 
are notorious for sagging in the rear.  Take a look at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~tjhiggin/hwystar/rearsag.html to see how I
dealt with the issue cheaply and easily.
