Well, why wouldn't he?  He _is_ British.

Actually, in the first Sid Halley book "Odds Against" he drove 
a Mercedes SL. Then the show was made into a series for Granada 
TV starring Mike Gwilym, and they gave him a Scimitar.  Dick 
Francis then went on to write "Whip Hand" as a sequel to the
_series_ not the book.

Dick Francis's characters usually drive cool cars, Lotuses, 
Lamorghinis, Ladas...er, no, not Ladas.  But they ride even
better horses.
