Ray,
        I agree with your analysis., but I would also like to add one
more possibility.  Perhaps the engine was eith assembled using one of
those magical teflon or molybdenum-based additives or one of these
was added to the oil immediately following assembly.  These products
are supposed to be added after a suitable break-in period if they are
added at all.  They could conceivably prevent seating of the rings.
        I always thought the girls I used to date were telling me
what was wrong with my car when they yelled "carburetor!". No wonder
I've formed a low opinion of SU's.
