I replaced the needle adjuster seals in my SZs last weekend.
They're not back on the car yet, but I can see a great
improvement just on the bench. I want to thank Mike, Steven, Bob,
Dave and Peter for their suggestions and support.

Pushing that vicious looking retainer all the way up the bore is
what initially gave me pause. So, as several of you, suggested I
pushed the adjuster and retainer up a few mm, then pushed the
adjuster back down with the adjuster tool. This gave me enough
room to work the clip loose and extract it. Interesting how many
of you have dental picks! Before pushing the adjuster out, I
engaged the adjusting tool to keep the adjuster from cocking over
on its trip up the bore.

On the one with the stuck needle, I found a tube with just the
right diameters to clear the flange at the base of the needle and
bear on just the barrel. The problem turned out to be a fine
ridge on the bottom edge of the hole where the needle assembly
fits. So my continued turning of the adjusting screw eventually
jammed the needle against this ridge and did strip a tiny bit of
the thread on the adjuster. This ridge looked original and not
the result of damage leading me to guess that during assembly the
needle and adjuster are screwed together and put in from the top
of the guide rod. Anyway I cleaned up the ridge and thread and
got it all working properly.

Thanks again for your help.
