Well, my TR6 is almost ready to go back on the road ... maybe!

First, I got a call from my mechanic earlier today. He told me that the
right angle speedometer drive on my newly acquired OD transmission was
no good. Guess what, he just happened to have one that he was willing
to install for me for $75. I told him to put it ..., well I basically
told him to not worry about it and that I would take care of it after
the next couple of paychecks clear the bank.

Question number 1: Is this right angle drive repairable? Available new
or reconditioned? Available used? Expensive? All of the above? None of
the above?

Some PO (or it could have been the current O in a state of being POd) some time
ago dismantled the temperature compensators on the Zenith-Stromberg
carburettors. I would like to make certain that these devices are correctly
assembled and that they work correctly.

Question number 2: Do the bimetallic strips in these temp. compensators
have a shiny side and a sticky side like duck tape or is there any other
way of identifying which side goes in and which side goes out? Are these
devices supposed to open or close when they get hot? How do i go about
adjusting them? Should I just forget about trying to adjust them and buy
a pair of new ones?

I just got off the phone with the California DMV. I called to ask if I
could get a one day permit to drive the car from the shop to a smog place
and then back to where I am going to park it until it's ready to be put
back to the road. Only if I paid back registration and penalties back to
March 1990, I was told. I last drove the car on the last day before the
registration expired on 18. March 1990. I beleive that I paid the
registration fee for the next year, but that the registration was never
issued because I wasn't able to get a smog certificate at that time. The
car has not been driven and the tires have not even touched a public
street since the registration expired. I was told that I could have
avoided the back registration fees and penalties by registering the car
as non-operating and paying a $5 fee per year. I did not know that at the
time.

Question number 3: When did that stupid rule go into effect? It used to
be, that I could just sign a statement that the car had not been
operated since such and such a date. Apparently I can no longer do that.
If I decide to put the car back in storage, I would still have to pay
back registration fees and penalties, before I could register it as
being non-operating. If I keep the car in storage until 1974+25=1999, will
that rule no longer apply? What if I were to sell the car? What if I were
to sell the car and then buy it back? Any suggestions? Is there any hope?

Aaaarrrrgghhhhhhhh!!!!
