Ray Gibbons asks about log books:

British cars used to have green documents which were like
the title deeds of a house - I think, but I may be wrong,
that possession of this "log book" was tantamount to proof
of ownership. The log book gave the usual details - chassis
number, engine number, first registration date, colour etc.,
and there were several spaces on subsequent pages for
changes of ownership - you wrote in the details, then had
it stamped by the Ministry of Transport. They were made of
card and fan-folded to be tall and thin.

This was replaced (in the early seventies, I think) by a
single sheet with similar information, recording no longer
the owner, but the "registered keeper" of the car, now
issued by the DVLC in Wales. Only the last owner is now
recorded.

Paul.
