This forwarded from the ca.driving newsgroup. I'd been thinking that a
black and yellow plate for my '67 TR4A would be nice, but it looks like
I'm too late.

Subject: Black and Gold license plates to be recalled by DMV

I recently read an article in Old Car News and Marketplace that the state
plans on recalling all out of use 1963-1970 black and gold license plates.
The recalled plates/numbers will be re-issued as vanity plates and will
generate additional income for the state. I've since spoken with Karen
Schweizer, deputy at the Public Inquiry branch of the DMV, and she
elaborated on the DMV's plans.
Ms. Schweitzer stated that all inactive 1963-1970 plates are currently being
recalled and re-used; she stated that plates that are currently in use will
not be recalled. Interestingly enough, she stated that it is illegal to
purchase previously issued, inactive black and gold plates and install
them on a 1963-1970 vehicle.
This is really bad news for owners of older cars that wish to retain the
original look and are seeking the old license plates. If you disagree with the
DMV's plans, you can voice your concern by writing to the address listed below.
