Sonja is finally back on the road after the traumatic move to
Milwaukee. Actually, she's been on the road for about a
month, but I've been busy drving her, not fixing her...
Anyways, I have a rebuilt speedo which died after 3.7 miles
(gotta love it), an overdrive which doesn't overdrive, and a
reverse gear which sometimes doesn't reverse real well.
Numero Uno:
The pump makes pump noises, the overdrive solenoid
engages, but no OD action. I've checked fluid levels,
but I guess I'm going to have to find a 750psi gauge
to check the pressure (The book claims 450-600). Any
clues on where I'd find such a beast or should I ask
the local BritCar shop to look at it? Anything else
simple I can look at before I do that? I've got the
O/D service book, but I lack many of the tools and all
of the experience...
Numero Duo:
Sometimes when I go into reverse, the clutch chatters
and I get a great deal of resistance to reversing.
I've checked brake shoes and such, but no joy. There
was some noise from the prop shaft/U-joint/diff area
the most recent time she did it, but I couldn't
localize it. The U-joints are new and the prop shaft
was just balanced. Could it be an angle thing? The
engine and trans mounts are new...
Notes:
The "new" TR6-ish wheels balanced out kind of funny
(Large amounts of run-out on the rims, but little
weight needed ) but they measured OK by the factory
techniques. Turns out that TR4 wheels are not
hub-centric, and the balance machine was, so it isn't
as bad as it looks. There's no vibration at speed,
and very little wobble visible when I jack up and
spin. I hope they work out. I've spent a year and a
half finding these bloody wheels. I got 195/60-15
Pirelli P500's for it, for reasons which are hard to
explain, but they look OK and drive quite nice (For
the 100 or so miles I've had them). Love the wheels!!!
(These are the 5.5" wheels which accept the TR4
hubcaps. Apparently only made for one year, but worth
the looking. They give her a wider footprint, but
they don't sacrifice the look of the original wheel).
