Well when I was in the service (Navy) and I worked on a variety of
different aircraft. What we used to use was like the best of both
scenarios. I was this sleave looking thingy like a crimp connector, only
the big difference was that in the center it had a ring of solder, and
you do some sort of "western union" type of splice, and after sliding
the the heat shrink sleeve over the splice you take a hair dryer and
melt the solder and the sleeve shrinks and gives tension relief along
with protecting the wire from shorts and other nasties.

We used this on all of the birds that got launched and recovered off the
deck of the aircraft carrier. I suspect that if it can take that kind of
abuse it would surely work on a vehicle that is subjected to the hazards
of most major cities and their horrendous roads.
