Nay, exhaust (and/or intake) manifold gaskets are always dry, at least 
in every application that I have seen.  My "modern" autos also have several 
rubber gaskets (such as the valve cover) which are to be installed without 
gasket compound.  And yes, the carb-kit instructions I have seen usually 
request no gasket compound, either.  As far as the technique for using it 
when it *is* required, someone else covered that topic here in the last year 
or so -- anyone recall that discussion?
