This morning there was an MG at the local British garage which I didn't
recognize. It looked a bit like a T-series, but larger (much larger than
the Spitfire it was parked next to, for example), with huge (diameter)
   wire wheels. What was it?

Was it a convertible? It could have been a YT, which is basically a
four seat TD, or it could be one of the prewar MG's like a VA or SA or
WA, which were available with 'drophead' bodies. The WA, incidentally,
was the largest MG ever.
