Larry asks about vibrations when the driveline is unloaded.
My Vitesse had exactly the same problem---vibration when not
accelerating and lots of it above 80MPH or so. The problem
in my case was the sliding joint in the propshaft. A new
prop installed and cured the problem. To check the propshaft
sliding joint, get under the car and try to pull the propshaft
up and down, near the joint end (the rear usually). If there is
any vertical play whatsoever, you need a new propshaft.
The advice about getting the flanges alligned correctly is
sound and if you can't see any problems with anything else,
get the prop flanges rorated by 180 degrees and see what happens.
However, the fact that the vibration is bad when the engine is
not pulling points directly at the propshaft. This is because
the sliding joint is splined and when taking power, the splines
bind together. They also bind on overrun (say going down a hill).
When not transmitting power, the joint un-binds and vibrates around.
