On your third question, I may be able to offer some help. Some time ago,
there was discussion on this list about replacement struts for the hatch.
Here is what was said (part numbers are for NAPA):
20 lb. strut - BK 819-5591 (not quite strong enough)
30 lb. strut - BK 819-5592
40 lb. strut - BK 819-5579 (possibly too strong)
The feeling at the time seemed to be that the 30 lb. strut should be just
about right, but no one had tried it yet.
This might be a place to start.
