I did an experiment this weekend on my motorhome that has a tendency to run
hot at speed similar to the problems that most seem to have with their
brick. I t would be fine at city speeds and even fine at 50, but once you
get up above 55 the temp gauge would start to climb 210...230...250 and not
stop until I slowed back to about 50. The motor only has 5K miles on it the
trans is a fresh reman, the rad, water pump, hoses and belts are all new. I
even removed the trans cooler lines from the rad and installed a fan fed
cooler under the floor. all this made no change....sound familiar? On
Thursday I broke down and removed the fan clutch, it seemed real good, it
had lots of drag on it and the thermo sensor seemed to work, I thought I had
just wasted 2.5 hours getting it out. Since it was out I put in a brand new
one but was pessimistic as to the results. well I drove it over 200 miles at
70-75 and the temp gauge never went above 200. When I got back I went out
back to check the clutches on the bricks and they all seemed looser than the
one I just threw out.
The moral of the story is..... if your brick runs real hot at "high" speed
but is OK at lower speeds the problem may be your fan clutch. It should be
much easier to change on a brick than on my motorhome that I had remove the
grille and rad to get at.
