Carl,

  I don't really know.  Most of my cars have external regulators.
I guess I'm from the old school, I like pieces.  If the regulator
fails, you replace it and not the Alternator.  By the same token
if the alt. fails you replace it, not the regulator.

 However, this would also depend on the cost of the reg. and the
alt. and the internally regulated alt.  If for some reason the
internally reg. alt was cheaper then the externally reg. alt, you
might be onto something.
