Hi folks,

How did it go at the Pro?? The lot's at Fontana are awesome. You could run
6-7 different autoxes there.

The CMC (Camaro Mustang Challenge) race at the speedway was awesome! The
first race grid was set by qualifying with 4 of the first 6 qualifiers being
SF autoxers. Nick Steele (old LA FSer) was on pole, a racer 2nd, I had the
inside of the second row with Erick van Wagenen on the outside and Dave
Morin had the inside of the 3rd row.

Some notable differences between autox and rracing.

In autox you don't get to hit the top of 5th prior to the first turn in an
18 car field. (in fact that doesn't happen on any road course I know, but a
super speedway is different)

Braking from 130 to 80 for the first turn in a pack of 18 roaring snarling
cars is unique to rracing. (which is why the first row is best)

In autox you don't get to drive until your brakes heat past their
effectiveness and your tires go away and than still find you have 3 more
laps to go.

In autox I never got to have a van Wagenen spin right in front of me nor did
I get to use the admonition to "aim for where they are when they spin cause
when you get their they will be gone!".

In autox you don't get to drift a 1+ g turn at a buck thirty +. (160 in the
American Iron class (which is kinda like CP))

In autox you don't get to do turns 3 cars wide.

In autox you don't get 1.6 miles of wide open throttle between turns.

And maybe most importantly:

In autox you don't get to do a barrel roll with your car after hitting and
climbing a tire wall at over 90 mph, nor

do you get to unhook your harness hanging upside down, while listening to
the fuel pump still ticking and the gas pouring on to the tarmac behind you
and realizing that your fabricator had arms 2 inches longer than yours when
he installed the emergency electrical cutoff.

One of the challenges of the autox upgrade path is we don't know how to
drive at any less than 11/10ths!

Only time and $ will tell if the Herron/van Wagenen/Kincymobile is mortally
wounded past resuscitation. At this point we know we need a new roof,
windshield, hood, 2 front fenders, a nose, and two rear quarter panels.
(probably could use a couple of doors from my last major off at Sears Pt
also).

Jesus, you still got that 93 Camaro front clip?
