I don't know much about welding alum., but I don't think you can use the
same gas for both.  A CO2/Argon Mix is generally recommended for mile steel
welding...I can't remember which gas is for aluminum.  The guys as the
places that sell the gas are pretty knowledgeable, I usually ask them.

I would get the biggest tank that you can strap to your welder - economy of
scale works here.
