Bob,

We get these kinds of problems in my shop regularly. I doubt it is an oil
problem unless someone has changed the oil and put the wrong stuff in it.
The late model 6 speed manuals all come from GM with synthetic gear oil in
them. I would first suspect a bad pilot bearing. Other than that, the
clutch disk may be dragging and therefore slightly turning the input shaft
even after the pedal is depressed. This could be a bad pressure plate,
drive plate or the drive plate may be hanging up on the splines of the input
shaft and not coming away from the flywheel (a little rust on the splines
can cause this). Another possibility is the master or slave cylinder isn't
providing full stroke when cold. To check any of these synarios, the tranny
will have to be pulled.

I bought a 2000 Firebird 6-speed with 20k miles about a month ago. It
is very hard to get into gear first thing in the morning. Reverse is
almost impossible unless I go into another gear first. You can tell
that the synchros are having to stop the gears from moving: the car
will actually try to roll forward a slight bit as I go into gear! Other
than that, the clutch adjustment (at top/bottom of stroke) feels fine.
When things are warmed up, the problem is virtually non-existent. If
this is not simply "the nature of the beast", I'd like to get it fixed
under warranty (clutch adjustment? throwout bearing?). If it is normal,
I don't want the dealer mechanics wrenching on it since it took them
over an hour just to program a new key fob, and they had written
instructions!

Any thoughts?
