I've only got a single layer, flame retardent cotton driving suit from my
Solo 1 days, so I can't stay in the flame war too long...

In my opinion, the ages of cars in their respective levels of preparedness
is not just because it takes that proportion of time to "figure it out". It
is also cost and rule factor.

Older cars are cheaper to buy to modify (duh)
Less money spent on the chassis, more to spend on development.

Also,
The rules in SP build a small channel to develop horsepower through.
That channel costs a whole lot more than a camshaft and a shaved head.
And that channel costs more than adding a chip to a turbo car.

If SP ain't broke why fix it?
(I personally think it's smarter [and cheaper] to go all the way to
prepared)

My understanding is that SM & ST weren't supposed to be classes to develop
cars for, they were catch all classes for folks who showed up that had done
what they wanted to to their street rides and were outside the rules for
either S, SP or even P.
The idea was to be inclusive of the "real world".
Of course it didn't work out that way, but that's another war.
