SPARK PLUGS

Please help me with a question about spark plug gap.
what is the rules for gap like how to set them up to run hot or cold and why 
would you do it that way? 
my car is a 96 Z28 with a LT1, should I set the gap at stock specs? or can i 
adjust them?
