Been there, done that! Back in 1999, ESPN2 was covering
an import drag weekend that also had an autocross. Not
being one to turn down an easy 3-foot tall trophy, I was
there. One of the cameramen was fascinated by how my old
GTI used to lift a wheel when it turned, and wanted to get
a shot of it from a "unique" angle.
So...he put his $17K broadcast TV camera on the COURSE side
of a cone in a sweeper during the lunch break, and asked me
to lift the wheel OVER the camera. I'm sure that the
locals are laughing right now, since they call me "plus one"
quite frequently. :-) Anyway, I took a run past the camera,
and got some decent air. Nope, not close enough for this
guy. Try it again. OK, if he wants the shot that bad, I'll
give it to him! It took two more tries, but he finally got
a shot where you could see the bottom of the shock. To save
everyone the time of asking, the camera left the course
area in one piece. :-)
I don't know if the clip was ever aired, but it certainly
was a memorable day.....
