There was an example of this at a local autox recently. A relative newcomer
to the sport in a GS car (Taurus SHO) was equipped with R1s et al. He was
making one of his last runs of the day and as he came into a heavy braking
area, all the studs on the right front wheel proceeded to shear, making the
wheel and tire a projectile. The driver was rattled, but OK.

Needless to say, the car missed the corner and slithered to a stop in a safe
position. The car was properly teched, no safety problems with the course
(all obstacles were at least 30' from the course), but this had the potential
to be worse had it happened on some other point on the course or on other
courses I've seen in the past.

Just thought I'd add my experiences.
