Hi Craig, and welcome to the throng of lunatics that we are.  You will
hear this from a good precentage of the folks here, but please let me
the first...

Take the money you save from not buying the pads and use it to go to
some more events.  The best performance investment you can make for the
dollar is in the single most adjustable component in your car...you. 
Most street pads can stand up to the rigors of autocrossing quite well. 
In fact maybe better, because they wont chew up your rotors like some
performance pads do.  My advice is drive, drive, drive, and don't sweat
the small stuff until you are getting beat by only a couple of tenths.
