Steve,
In the picture of filter adapter C5TZ6881A  it appears that there is no 
o-ring nor a groove for one.  This would explain why, in this application, 
the unusual gasket with holes would be necessary.  I have the more recent 
Ford Motorsport version and it does have the groove and the o-ring.
