Another thing to bear in mind is if the trans has an OD. The planetary
gears in the OD unit act like a centrifuge, and can separate out some oil
additives. That and the possible contamination of the friction surfaces
inside the OD have kept me using 30W non-detergent in my cars for almost 20
years.
The most important thing to remember is DON'T use gear oil, not even a
synthetic. The splash factor is only one aspect - the extreme pressure
additives in gear oils can also damage the bushings and synchro rings.
