Dear Mr. Hughes,
Thank you for your interest in BMW history.
The design of the BMW V8 all-alloy engine did not exist at the end of the
second world war. First studies for such an engine started around 1950. In
1951 BMW tested two V8 engines of US-American design but developed its own
design. First test runs of the BMW V8 engine started in spring 1952. The
story that the BMW V8 engine design was taken as reparations can therefore
not be confirmed.
