Most people from the time of the TR-4s did the conversion to the spin-on
filters. I did that on my TR-4 and TR-6. I have never done it to my TR-3A.
The older canisters were OK if you had the car on a rack, but otherwise a
PITA. Interestingly my '86 BMW-635. which has a large straight six and is the
same engine used in many of the large BMWs up to the early 90s, uses a
canister exactly like the TRs used. I suspect that this was a standard design
in Europe for quite a while. It is not quite as difficult to change the oil
on the BMW. The newer Beemers use an excellent system, where the canister is
mounted high on the front of the engine, just behind the radiator, and all one
needs to do is remove the top (a large socket does it,) lift out the old
filter element, drop the new one in, pour oil over the new one, and spin the
cover back on. Then fill the crankcase. Too bad the British did not figure
that one out.

Every time the Brit Leyland assembly guys put a TR 6 together , bet
they chuckled at how difficult it was going to be for a US bound model
to get an oil and filter change. One of the top changes on my list
when rebuilding my engine was to get an adapter so that my oil changes
would be easier.
