The probable cause is that your temperature compensators are either
mis-adjusted or stuck. These adjust the fuel mixture based on the temperature
of the carb. If they are not operating the mixture goes rich as the carbs
warm up. The symptom is particularly bad after the carbs have been heat soaked
by a hot motor. You shut down the car, and the flow of fresh, cool gas stops.
The heat from the exhaust manifold warms the carbs and the fuel in them, and
when you restart the car it runs very rich until the carbs cool off to a more
normal operating temperature. The mixture gets so rich that the car will idle
roughly and in extreme cases it will die.
Do this when the engine is cold:
1. Start by removing the covers to the compensators (Two very small
screws. Don't lose them!)
2. Clean the compensator by squirting in a generous amount of carb
cleaner on the pintle end of the bi-metallic strip. Gently work the pintle up
and down no more than 1/16" of an inch with a small screw driver. If you lift
the pintle too far, you will bend the bi-metallic strip so be gentle.
3. When the carb has dried, you will need to adjust the compensator.
The correct way to do it is to set it at 140F using hot water and a
thermometer. Here is a ghetto method that will get you close -
a. Loosen the tiny Nyloc nut in the middle of the bi-metallic strip
until you observe the pintle raise slightly off its seat. Verify that it is
off its seat by depressing it gently with your finger tip and note that it
moves slightly before it stops on its seat. If it does not raise off its seat
and the Nyloc nut is loose, then the pintle is stuck (clean it again) or you
have a bad compensator.
b. Using your fingertip, repeatedly push down (gently!) on the pintle
as you tighten the lock nut until you can no longer feel the pintle move when
you depress it. Tighten the lock nut one full turn past this point.
c. Reinstall the cover.
This will get you close to the correct calibration.

Hi all,
I have been having a fairly constant problem with my 74 TR6. The car
starts from cold well and runs great but once it is fully warm it does not
like to idle. If I pull up to a stop light after the car is fully warmed up,
the idle will slowly drop and the car will stall. It seems to be worse after
I
stop for a short period of time and then begin driving again.
