Joe,
The engagement shaft/ lever of the A type overdrive has some play in it. It is
not that the lever slides on the shaft, but that the ball is not moved far
enough to allow oil to to flow for engagement. The proper adjustment is put a
drill bit through the hole in the lever in the up position so that the drill
bit slides into the hole in the case when the solenoid is energized. The
solution is to first take out the play in the lever shaft by lifting up on the
lever first without the solenoid energized to determine the amount of play to
remove. Then adjust the lever up past the hole in the case by the same amount
of play that was determined before hand. My overdrive takes 6 to 8 seconds to
engage now. The overdrive does not slip once engaged. I just do not have a
reason to remove the transmission cover to adjust the play out of the
engagement lever. I drive it daily. If this post does not make sense, let me
know.
