Glenn:
Do you have any auxiliary driving lights or fog lights? Do you have a good
stereo system in your car? I have these in addition to the fan and halogen
lights you describe. At night when it was raining (with my lights and wipers
on) my headlights would dim noticeably when at idle. It was even worse if the
radio was on and the electric fan was blowing. I changed to a GM alternator and
it made a real difference, though my Lucas unit may have been less than 100%
good.
I'm not sure your existing wiring will be problem unless there are breaks in
the insulation. Others may have another opinion. My wiring is all OE.
