Gee, in addition to the motor work mentioned in my cam query, I'm also going
to be doing a couple of transmissions. One of the circlip and bearing
removals has alread been done - those bits were fine powder and small
chunks in the oil. I should take a picture of what's left of that layshaft.
The other transmission is in much better shape, the layshaft was just
starting to show signs of wear.

Anyway, the circlips in question are not straight on the ends, but tapered.
One end should give you enough of a purchase with a small, flat blade
screwdriver to pry it out of the groove. It isn't that easy, as you have
to pry one end and try hold the thing from moving by pushing on the other
end, but it can be done.

On a side note, doing these two gearboxes was enough of an incentive to get
me to finally fabricate a puller for getting the middle bearing off the
mainshaft. Details on that tool RealSoonNow.
