Jerry, here is what I know happened with mine and what I did.
The cause of the missing fluid is from the failure of the seal inside the
bore of the MC. Not only was the seal not doing its job, but the bore itself
had pitted and was letting the fluid go past the seal. The fluid ended up in
the servo and was being sucked into the engine via the vacuum hose and
discharged through the exhaust, after being mixed in with fuel and whatever
gases are re circulated via the emissions set up. Not all the fluid escapes
that way and what will happen is that it seeps through the rim pf the servo
and leeks onto the engine bay paint, making a bloody awful mess over time.
First I tried to rebuild the unit with a $25.00 rebuild kit. I had no luck
and let me tell you what a pain to get the seal over the piston.
So I had to buy a new MC. Install was done very quickly as I had already
pulled the old one off. I emptied the Servo using air pressure, and rinsed
with hot soapy water. After hours of blowing air through the unit to dry it
out, a new filter kit was installed. I sprayed a little WD 40 as an anti
moisture preventative, just for luck. Don't know if that helped.
I had to do this because I had to deliver the car to the new owner 2 days
later and could not have him drive away with a faulty brake system.
You could have it re sleeved by Apple Hydraulics. I have no experience with
them, but have heard from the list that they are pretty decent. Depends on
how much time you want to be off the road.
