This is just my opinion on the subject.  I replace critical fasteners (rod
bolts, main bolts, head studs) when I do a rebuild and the ones that I'm
replacing are of indeterminate origin or history.  When I replace them, I
use higher-performance fasteners from places like ARP if they are available
because I am never quite sure if the standard replacement fasteners from
places like Moss and TRF really are equal to the originals (they might be,
but sometimes I've gotten stuff that looks vastly different from the
originals and since everything "TR" seems to be coming from the the third
world these days, I'm just not that secure in their "quality control").
Bottom line, do you want to have to potentially redo part or all of your
rebuild because you tried to save $130?

Is it prudent to replace the head studs when rebuilding?  Is there a way to
tell if the present hardware is deficient?  Is it worthwhile to buy the
"upgraded" studs?  APT sells the set for $129.00, Moss is $159.00. I did buy
new fasteners for the mains and con-rods.  The bolts from Moss have a flange
(like a washer).  The old hardware does not. Why are there no lock washers
on main cap and rod bolts?  Should I use locktite?
