except for catastrophic failure, tires nowadays are pretty reliable.

if you use modern tires in a "normal" size, you should be able to score a
new tire pretty much anywhere you can drive and have it mounted when you
need it.

If you want to accept that risk, skip the spare altogether and just carry
a can of "fix-a-flat" to pump up the tire if you happen to pick up a nail
or something. That translates to $5 for the goo and you get the entire
tire well for storage.
