steering rack gaiters

Dear List:
 
I have recently replaced the gaiters on my steering rack. The old ones were a 
mess, so they were no help in answering my question:
 
How much distance should there be between the end of the tie rod (without the 
tie rod end joint) and the outer end of the gaiter? I know they have to allow 
for a good bit of movement, but I don't know how much.
