Incompetence has reared it's ugly head again. I solved my shifter problem by removing the top cover and sliding the shift rods into neutral position as they should have been in the first place. Damn, sometimes I am my own worst enemy. I just hope now that when I fire her up fluids don't go squirting everywhere accompanied by horrid mechanical noises. Anyway thanks to all who responded.
