I think you are most likely correct about the lighter wheels vs. the
sidewalls with the 15" winning out. However, I just like the look of the
16" a bit better.
I've seen the 205/55/16's, but the look is not authentic enough for me.

Bastards! I'm running 205/65-15, and am very happy with them. But I
agree, the 16" size looks nice. However, I wonder what the difference
in weight is between the two wheel/tire combos. It's quite possible
that the 15" option is lighter and would get you around the
track/autocross quicker. It's an interesting debate: lower unsprung
weight versus shorter sidewalls...
