Al---Engine "bucking" rarely has anything to do with the gear you're in.
You should be able to duplicate this condition in any gear, given a
longer time frame. It could be as you suspect, and you've used up the
fuel in the lines and bowl(s) by the time you're in fifth. 

Beware of the "chrome and glass" filters with their restrictive
elements. I'll tell you what I think this kind of filter is good
for..Take out the element and use the see-thru case to view that fuel
(and no air bubbles) is present just before the first carburetor.

If you suspect the fuel pump itself, compare the pressure and volume
readings to the Bentley data. (Or just watch to see that it gushes from
the output side for half a minute)
