Josh---There are at least a half dozen different ways to re-engineer, or
at least back up the original cable action. Some are really works of
art, from being hydraulically operated, to slick brackets that will
operate from a lever inside the passenger footwell.
Years ago I drilled a 5/16" access hole thru the firewall, in line with
the end of the inner cable. I can pop my hood after removing the black
plastic fresh air vent, by using an L-shaped rod.
Yet the most simple, yet non-elegant way to have a backup, is to connect
a second cable to the one designed for the job. Thread this cable thru
the hole where the windshield washer hose goes thru, and have it exit
behind the radio speaker, more or less out of sight.

Fortunately, I've never had to use mine. Keeping the action force that
opens the hood to a minimum is the best insurance for this.
