Ray---Jay's reply on this is accurate. I will add that if you still have
the thermostatic switch in the radiator top hose, you can check to see
if lines are properly connected this way:  With the engine running, pull
off the hose that is now (?) connected to the distributor retard pot.
You should feel vacuum there. The engine should also speed up a little,
with your finger plugging this vacuum leak. The same should be true if
there is no thermo-switch in the routing.  The key here is that a
properly working vacuum retard system will retard ignition timing by
about 16 deg. Set to 4 deg. ATDC, or 12 deg. BTDC with this line
plugged.
