Mike----It's easy for the 'ball' at the top of the pushrod to slip out
of the socket at the rocker arm, during reassembly of the valve train.
This could be one reason for it breaking off, as the valve spring coils
bottomed on actuation. Strange that the engine continued to idle well on
five cylinders.

The input from you guys is terrific. It represents so much combined
experience.
Anyway, I took the advice of the folks who said pull the rocker cover and
take a look. It's easy and free.
Bottom line....The #2 rocker arm was sheared clean across on the adjustment
side. The free piece was perched on the brink of trying to fall into the gap.
The new rocker is on the way, and I'll be on the road this weekend. Thank
goodness the break occured in my garage and not on the road.
